Wes and Jason were at the 92nd Street Y this past Tuesday. Recap and photo from 92Y.
Last night at 92YTribeca—in a discussion moderated by Entertainment Weekly‘s Dave Karger—92YTribeca, Borders, and Twentieth Century Fox presented an evening of conversation with director Wes Anderson (The Darjeeling Limited, The Royal Tenenbaums) and actor Jason Schwartzman (The Darjeeling Limited, Bored to Death). In advance of the release of Anderon’s newest film, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes and Jason discussed working together on the film, a stop motion animated adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel.
Karger asked Anderson about the process he used for the voice overs, noting that in many animated movies, the actors will be alone in the studio reciting their lines, in “a very sterile environment,” separated from the other actors in the film. For Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes had everybody “on set” at his friend’s farm in Connecticut, where the actors worked together, recreating scenes from the book. Jason explained if the scene called for a tree, they would find a tree outside. “Yah, ok this tree looks good.” They would then proceed to run around, or do what was called for in the scene, acting out the roles while giving the voice overs. The movie’s website has video from the making of the movie, where you can see this process in action.
Our favorite part of the evening was the Q&A with the audience. One attendee asked Wes about his use of Futura in his films. “Font? Did you just ask a question about his use of fonts?” Karger responded. “Wow, we’ve got hard core font fans here tonight!” We smiled, because it’s true. We do have hard core fans, of all kinds. That’s how we roll at 92YTribeca.

Word today from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of twenty films eligible for an Oscar nomination in the Best Animated Film category. To see the full list of films, head on over to the AMPAS site. Only five films can receive a nomination, and prognosticators are betting Fox will be one of them.
Two more stories after the break.

2 comWaris Ahluwalia, with co-editors Mortimer Singer and Tina Bhojwani, have put together a beautiful and interesting scrapbook called To India with Love: From New York to Mumbai.
Ask people who have been there, and they will all tell you India is like no other place in the world, a land that stirs every one of the five senses and stays in your heart forever. It is this India that brought together three friends, Waris Ahluwalia, Mortimer Singer and Tina Bhojwani to raise funds, spirits, and awareness for the victims of the attacks in Mumbai in November, 2008. The editors set out to create a scrapbook collecting personal photos, stories, and memories from people who, like themselves, love India. The contributors include Wes Anderson, Adrien Brody, Francesco Clemente, Anthony Edwards, Jeanine Lobell, Natalie Portman, Yves Carcelle, Jean Touitou, Owen Wilson, Laura Wilson, Cynthia Rowley, James Ivory, Matthew Williamson, Rachel Roy, Tory Burch, Padma Lakshmi and Shobhaa De. This book declares to Mumbai and the whole country that we are all thinking of them and support them: hence To India, with Love: New York to Mumbai. Profits from the sales of the book will go to support families affected by the attacks. This book can truly make a difference, by opening eyes to the wonders of India and by once again letting the pen or a camera dominate the sword.
It is featured in the New York Times “The Moment” blog.

LIVE from the NYPL presents an evening with director WES ANDERSON (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) in conversation with screenplay co-writer NOAH BAUMBACH (The Squid and the Whale) about Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson’s first animated film. In Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson utilizes classic handmade stop-motion techniques to tell the story of the classic children’s book by ROALD DAHL. Mr. and Mrs. Fox (George Clooney and Meryl Streep) live an idyllic home life with their son Ash (Jason Schwartzman) and visiting young nephew Kristofferson (Eric Anderson). But after twelve years of quiet domesticity, the bucolic existence proves too much for Mr. Fox’s wild animal instincts. Soon he slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief and in doing so, endangers not only his beloved family, but the whole animal community… The film is produced by Allison Abbate, Scott Rudin, Wes Anderson and Jeremy Dawson.
Jason Schwartzman appeared last night to talk about Yams and Bored to Death, which has it’s season finale a week from Sunday. The show will be back for a second season next year.
