The (Mr.) Foxy cover of Film Comment

The November/December 2009 issue of Film Comment features Mr. Fox on the cover and a great article about the film by Kent Jones on the inside. Pick it up at your local bookseller or buy it directly from the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

The great folks over at Film Comment (Twitter) sent over an excerpt from the article:

ANIMAL PLANET

Fantastic Mr. Fox will undoubtedly provoke a lot of chatter about the inevitability of Wes Anderson turning to animation, as well as a flurry of musings over the distinctions to be made between his new adaptation (from a beloved Roald Dahl children’s novel) and his previous, strictly original films (in the end, the difference is negligible). There’s no doubt in my mind that the words “clever,” “quirky,” “cool,” “twee,” and “arch” will be employed by someone, somewhere, ironically and otherwise. And another Wes Anderson movie will come and go, its surfaces examined down to the minutest detail, its emotional underpinning impatiently and perhaps even proudly overlooked.

Bravo. Can’t wait to read it.

Waris: “To India, with Love”

Waris Ahluwalia, with co-editors Mortimer Singer and Tina Bhojwani, have put together a beautiful and interesting scrapbook called To India with Love: From New York to Mumbai.

Ask people who have been there, and they will all tell you India is like no other place in the world, a land that stirs every one of the five senses and stays in your heart forever. It is this India that brought together three friends, Waris Ahluwalia, Mortimer Singer and Tina Bhojwani to raise funds, spirits, and awareness for the victims of the attacks in Mumbai in November, 2008.  The editors set out to create a scrapbook collecting personal photos, stories, and memories from people who, like themselves, love India. The contributors include Wes Anderson, Adrien Brody, Francesco Clemente, Anthony Edwards, Jeanine Lobell, Natalie Portman, Yves Carcelle, Jean Touitou, Owen Wilson, Laura Wilson, Cynthia Rowley, James Ivory, Matthew Williamson, Rachel Roy, Tory Burch, Padma Lakshmi and Shobhaa De. This book declares to Mumbai and the whole country that we are all thinking of them and support them: hence To India, with Love: New York to Mumbai. Profits from the sales of the book will go to support families affected by the attacks. This book can truly make a difference, by opening eyes to the wonders of India and by once again letting the pen or a camera dominate the sword.

Halloween costume contest entries

That’s it, that’s it! It’s all over! The 2009 Rushmore Academy Halloween Costume Contest has come to its conclusion. You can view all of the entries in the gallery below (please contact me if your photo is not included). The editors will select our finalists over the weekend and post their entries for public voting sometime early next week. Winners will will receive a Fantastic Mr. Fox soundtrack, poster, and tie, along with some other goodies. We also expect to give away some Noah and the Whale CD/DVD sets, courtesy of Sneak Attack media.

Sounding Fantastic. If the trailers for Wes Anderson‘s stop-motion-animation adaptation of the Roald Dahl children’s book Fantastic Mr. Fox aren’t enough to suggest great stuff ahead (the film opens Nov. 20), the sound track should clinch the deal. An integral component of the writer/director’s movies thus far (think John Lennon‘s “Oh Yoko!” in Rushmore, Nick Drake‘s “Fly” in The Royal Tenenbaums), the collection of songs and tunes for Fantastic Mr. Fox includes such furry numbers as “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” from the Wellingtons, two from the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones‘ “Street Fighting Man,” and a handful of Burl Ives incantations – yes, Burl Ives! – guaranteed to spark a Burl revival. Throw in some Art Tatum, Jarvis Cocker, and Bobby Fuller Four, plus beautiful instrumental sketches from French composer Alexandre Desplat, and you have one of the loveliest, most eccentric sound tracks to come along since – well, since Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited. LIVE from the NYPL presents an evening with director WES ANDERSON (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) in conversation with screenplay co-writer NOAH BAUMBACH (The Squid and the Whale) about Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson’s first animated film. In Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson utilizes classic handmade stop-motion techniques to tell the story of the classic children’s book by ROALD DAHL. Mr. and Mrs. Fox (George Clooney and Meryl Streep) live an idyllic home life with their son Ash (Jason Schwartzman) and visiting young nephew Kristofferson (Eric Anderson). But after twelve years of quiet domesticity, the bucolic existence proves too much for Mr. Fox’s wild animal instincts. Soon he slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief and in doing so, endangers not only his beloved family, but the whole animal community… The film is produced by Allison Abbate, Scott Rudin, Wes Anderson and Jeremy Dawson.
